Lawrentians will take to the links, diamonds, fields, courts, and lakes this spring, beginning yet another exciting season of Big Red sports. Varsity athletes will compete at baseball, crew, golf, lacrosse, softball, tennis, and track … here's a sneak peak at what Big Red fans will see this spring.

Big Red will feature outstanding talent on the mound this year from veterans Tom Tesauro '08 (who held opponents to a 3.03 ERA and a .224 batting average in '07), Jordan Rosenberg '08, and Mike Goldstein '08. Third Formers James Chiorello and Michael Coleman will round out this top-notch rotation. Coach Champ Atlee also expects power from his offense, led by co-captains Curt Schickner '08 (who topped the team in hitting last year at .413) and Mike Cuskley '08. Infielder Khifer O'Connor '10 has also made his mark at the plate in spring training.

A number of fresh faces will join veterans Tom Dethlefs '08 and Bruno Salemme '08 on the water this year. Big Red will face another challenging season, rowing against top-notch teams within the MAPL as well as other powerhouse programs in the annual Stotesbury Cup Regatta.

Under the leadership of returning Fifth Formers Haley Carstensen, Frances Hardy and Jillian Martynec, the Senior Four has the potential for strong showings at the regattas. Last year's novice rowers continue to develop both their strength and technique and will be competing in the challenging eights category as a Junior Eight. National team rower Molly Baker is back this year to coach these two boats, and, after a season of maternity leave, Coach Taylor has returned to coach the promising novice squad.

'07 Record: 8-4-1. First place in the MAPL, third place in the NJISAA
Led by Captains Eric Chipin '08 and Brad Kushner '09, the varsity team will defend its MAPL championship title and its possession of the Crooked Stick trophy (earned in the School's annual match against the Hill School). Having placed third at the NJISAA tournament last year, the Big Red golfers hope to regain the state Prep A title in 2008. Strong contributors this year will include Fourth Form returnees Pierce Dever, Zach Davis, Ryder Finney, and John Ezekowitz.

Lawrenceville will enjoy a greatly expanded field of competitors as new girls' golf teams are springing up among public and independent schools across the region. Big Red will benefit from the experience of several returning varsity players (Sarah Schiel '08, Maria Zheng '08, Katharine Sharpstone '09, Kristen Parratt '09, and Tae Suh '09), along with a promising group of girls who played with the team last year, and exciting infusion of very talented Second Formers.

Team Captains: Anthony Adler '08, Rob Castelo '08, and Jared Madison '08
'07 Record: 17-1. First place in the MAPL, first place in the NJISAA, Pitt Division champions
This year's team has big shoes to fill but will be ably led by Fifth Form captains Anthony Adler, Rob Castelo, and Jared Madison. Goaltender Madison, a three-year starter with a 37-1 record, will return in the cage to provide both leadership and depth, as will Fifth Form defensemen Rob Castelo, Baxter Lanius, Jason Moscowitz, and Bob Smith.
Big Red will be equally strong at the midfield with Adler (the 2007 leading scorer) back, along with veterans Matt Restaino '08 and Andrew Van Valkenburg '08. Fourth Formers Max Van Bourgondien and Bryan Hopper have emerged as strong two-way players and they will be joined by Will Edwards '08. Coach Fitzpatrick says the three Fourth Form attack starters Luke Armour, Duncan Clancy, and Charlie Curtis seem to be establishing excellent chemistry and will be able to play together for quite some time.

'07 Record: 8-6. First place in the MAPL
Lawrenceville will rely heavily on its senior defensive unit for success this year and hopes to capitalize on the addition of significant team speed to move the ball in transition. Anchoring Big Red's defense are experienced Fifth Formers Mackey Violich, and tri-Captains Jamie Burchfield, Eimile Logan, and Blake Morris, who bring a combined 13 years of varsity experience to the squad. Speedy Fourth Formers Virginia Savage, Soojeong Chi and Kelsea Smith will return at midfield. They, along with Camille Richardson '10, will be pacing the midfield transition and will serve as the catalyst for Lawrenceville's offense. Payson Sword '08 (and her outstanding power shot) will be on attack, joined by tenacious Third Formers Lindsay Becker and Carter Ashforth. The power and skill of this well-balanced trio should wreak havoc on opposing defenses.

Lawrenceville softball squad returns from a very successful preseason Florida trip with a young but experienced team ready to take on a very challenging schedule. Third Form pitchers Alexa Lesenskyj and Ashley Perritt were good last season and each has worked hard in the off-season to improve her skills. Co-captains Sam Spiga and Christina Barber return at catcher and first base respectively and will hit in the middle of the order. Rebecca Hu '11 adds depth to an infield which returns Caroline Dittrich '09, Anne Schwartz '09, and Emily Schiel '10. Emily Hu '11will be in the outfield with slugging centerfielder Brit Williams '08 as well as returning veterans Whitney Worthy '08, McKenna Vanderbeek '09, and Becca Smith '09.

Fifth Formers Geoff Joseph, Tolly Krusen, Mike Sisti, and Harrison Waterstreet will anchor the Big Red squad this year, aided by return players Hank Mancuso '09, Donald Kleckner '09, and Tim Shen '09. Coach Cantlay is also looking forward to strong efforts from rookies Hollin Wakefield '09 and McLean Macionis '10 to recapture Big Red's MAPL and NJISAA titles.
